The only part of design that is relevant to a workflow but is still equally as important is making sure your aware of the final result. Be aware of the final size of the images before you scan them in so you have enough resolution to print, if your using pantone colours in your layouts try to use the ones that will reproduce the best in four colour. Make sure you happy with all the automatic trapping that your application gives your file, remember that illustrator applications don’t offer give spread or coke and everything will be knocked out. Final don’t work in applications that nobody can output film or plates from, Word is a word processing application, publisher is a freebie and is only any good for laser printers, Coreldraw is very user friendly but isn’t the easiest application to output from. The main software packages to use are Photoshop, Illustrator, Freehand and QuarkXpress.
